Our current travels began in 2011 with a trip to Australia. Along with visits to friends and relatives, we planned a 10 day trip exploring the Northern Territory. I explored the ground on Google Earth: Liz explored the literature, and brought an online guide by a lady who lives there.
We hired a 4WD camper, and with our two eldest boys headed out into the bush. They both lived in Perth and worked in the bush, one as a geologist the other as a geologist’s field assistant. The guide became the Bridget bible and took us to some wonderful places. On our travels we met the Australian grey nomads: we vowed to be European grey nomads when we retired.
Our appetite wetted, we bought an AutoSleeper Duetto camper van the next spring and started planning a trip to France. My Google Earth searches took me to the Auvergne and the Cevennes. Liz’s literature wanderings brought Wild Swimming in France through the letterbox.
We’ve never looked back. Our bibles [they live in the front glove compartment on the van] are:
- Wild Swimming in France – Daniel Start
- Camping and Caravanning in France – Alan Rogers
- All the Aires – France – Vicarious Books
- Passion France
- Le Guide Officiel Camping Caravaning.
Most folk flock to the cities. We’re a little different, we travel the wilder rivers of Europe. We swim, walk, cycle and do a little canyonning.
