Mt Caroux – Gorge du Colombieres – Gorge L’Heric

Mont CaIMG_1808roux is the main peak in the Monts d’Espinouse – part of the Parc Naturel Regional du Haut Languedoc.  It’s steep precipitous south face has two stunning gorges.  The Gorge L’Heric is the most famous, with a small restricted access road running up the gorge to the hamlet of Heric.  There are various small to medium size pools along the way including the Cherry Tree Pool.  Campervans can stay overnight in the car park at the bottom of the gorge at La Trivalle.  There’s a toilet block, water taps and a waste emptying point [picture below].  An old railway line – now a cycle track – runs across the bottom of the car park.  You can take it into the village for supplies or cycle for miles in either direction.

The lesser known Gorge du Columbieres is our favourite [the main feature picture].  Just above the main pools is a stunning small deep pool, with shade, and places for high diving and jumping – take a picnic.  Park opposite the Marie and School and walk up the gorge, past the first more popular pools.  You can scramble further up the gorge to more pools.
